Top 5 Suitcase Picks
By Laura Carson Miller
In the current issue of Porter, which happens to be my fave magazine, there is a story about Joan Didion showing a packing list she used as she covered different stories in various parts of the world. She said it helped her to ‘pack without thinking’ and ‘pass on either side of the culture.’
I wholeheartedly agree that having a few items that easily multitask and allow you to not so much blend into your destination but to simplify packing and dressing so you can better enjoy your travels, is a no brainer.
My list of top 5 suitcase picks take the guess work out of staying calm, cool, collected and not to mention gorgeous, while globe trotting or even if you’re merely going to the lake for a long weekend with friends.
This shoe is a winner because it is both cute and ultra comfortable, and the wedge brings something to your outfits that flats never will. Great with long dresses, shorts, jeans (skinny, cropped or the ultra trendy flares that are everywhere), these babies are comfortable for sightseeing –really!!- or an after dinner boat cruise, and get this, they have a Velcro strap so super easy to whip off in the security line at the airport!
So much to love here! This cool tunic would be great as a swimsuit cover up, over jean shorts with gladiator flat sandals, over skinny jeans with simple ballet flats…the options are endless. In cooler months top it with a leather jacket on fall evenings. I might add that I would so wear this to a fancy event or party with black leather leggings, black strappy heels and simple diamond stud earrings.
If you blow before you go you can ensure your blowout investment pays dividends with this multitasking duo from Klorane. Their dry shampoo is legendary on it’s own, but add the terry cloth lined shower cap, which not only protects your strands during your bath or shower, but can be reversed to use during at home deep conditioning treatments, and you’re truly off the races. Just apply your conditioner of choice, place the cap over your hair with terry cloth side against your tresses, and relax for 20-30 minutes. The cap is totally machine washable so no muss, no fuss, you’re all set for your next hair adventure.
When traveling I really prefer a makeup look that is minimal and super fast to apply. Find the shade that works for you and apply AMERICANA on lips and cheeks for a chic and natural look. For added dimension, also purchase the pencil one shade darker and use as a contour stick. Layer and/or mix the two shades on your lips for multiple lip color combos. You’re welcome.
Totally work this satin slip by sleeping in, tucking it in jeans or a skirt (the silky fabric layers easily and is not bulky!) and adding a chic blazer for a night out on the town, or wearing it layered under a long sleeved cotton tee or light cardigan, with shorts, leggings or jeans, to keep you warm on the airplane. Tuck it in and blouse it over your waist a bit for a casual chic look..enough said!
