Handing Over the Best Hand Creams
By Laura Carson Miller
My obsession with hands and hand creams, not to mention nail polish and cuticle moisturizers – oil, cream, it matters not, goes way back. My mother has always had beautiful hands and lovely groomed nails that look feminine and classic, so I come by it naturally and with zero apologies.
At this point in my life I consider myself a certified hand cream queen, as it seems to follow me wherever I go. In my purse, in my desk drawer by my computer, in the basket beside my chair in the living room, on my dresser in the bedroom, in the bathroom closet: hand cream is ubiquitous.
As with many personal care products, different times of day lend themselves to different hand cream formulations. Here I share the current lineup of hand cream stars that keep my hands on their toes. (Do you see what I did there?)
In the morning I slather on generous amounts of Jergens BB Hand Perfecting Hand Cream. Most days I massage it in all the way up to my elbows, because, why not? It has SPF 20 from AVOBENZONE 1.25% (chemical sunscreen ingredient) and is a BB cream so it offers those soft focus qualities that make skin look a lot smoother and feel nicely supple. It is very important to protect hands daily with SPF, kids, and this hand cream does that while providing moisture and reducing the look of dark spots, if you’re in that camp, with the tropical trio of pineapple, grapefruit and lemon juices.
My next hand cream encounter comes when I’m done with lunch, usually around 2pm. I like to apply a thick coat of Jane Iredale HandDrink Hand Cream and let it sit for a full minute, sometimes two if I’m avoiding whatever I have to do next, before rubbing it in. The Rosa Damascena Flower Oil in this vegan formula is uplifting, so you get an aromatherapy treat along with SPF 15 (from Zinc Oxide 2.75% and Titanium Dioxide 1.25%, physical sunscreen ingredients) and antioxidant protection from Green Tea and Blackberry Extracts.
In the evening, after I wash and apply a few products (that are supposed to work magic) to my face, I reach for Murad Rejuvenating AHA Hand Cream. Glycolic Acid (aka AHA, and did you know it’s derived from sugar cane?) pumps up collagen to improve fine lines while Hyaluronic Acid provides immediate and lasting moisture. This cream has a distinct sandalwood fragrance that I enjoy. I love this one as an evening hand cream as it contains no SPF and sinks right in so no worries about it transferring on to face, hair or bed sheets. You can get right on with your sweet dreams!
In my purse and my cars glove box, I like to keep any one of the luscious L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream Trio, they’re all spectacular, while the third goes in the always packed and ready to go travel bag.
And now, a special LCM Lifestyle beauty tip:
If you really want to up your hand cream game, try these two tricks to further boost the benefits of regular hand cream maintenance.
- Break open one of these little gems, Lumene Bright Now Vitamin C Beauty Drops, and mix in your palm with your blob of hand cream. Vitamin C brightens dull and parched skin so it’s perfect for hands that have been through cold, harsh winter weather.
- In case you missed it, my March Best Beauty monthly feature for Best Self Atlanta magazine offered a great tip to help keep cuticles in check and make your hand cream go the extra mile. Read it here: http://issuu.com/bestselfatlanta/docs/best_self_atlanta_0315.
